Manresa grew on the slopes above the Cardener River in central Catalonia, and the map shows it clearly. A knot of narrow, irregular streets wraps around a hilltop and runs down to the water, then gives way to the wider blocks of the modern town. The Llobregat runs not far to the east, and the jagged massif of Montserrat stands on the horizon.
The Basilica of Santa Maria de la Seu crowns the old centre, and below it the stone arches of the Pont Vell cross the river. Manresa is also known for Ignatius of Loyola, who spent months here in 1522 and 1523 praying in a cave above the Cardener. That period shaped his Spiritual Exercises.
As the capital of the Bages comarca, the town has spread along the roads and rail lines leading out of the valley. Pont Vell
The medieval stone bridge is one of the oldest crossings on the Cardener. On the map it is a short, deliberate line linking the historic centre to the far bank.
