Manzhouli lies in the far north-east of Inner Mongolia, at the point where China, Russia and Mongolia nearly meet. It is surrounded by the treeless grasslands of Hulunbuir. From above, the contrast is stark: a dense, rectangular city with wide expanses of open steppe on every side. Hulun Lake, one of China's largest lakes, lies to the south-east.
The city owes its existence to the railway. It grew up at the frontier crossing of the line linking the Trans-Siberian route with north-east China, and it remains one of the country's most important land ports for trade with Russia. The architecture shows it: many buildings echo Russian styles, and the city's signage is often in three languages.
A Manzhouli map poster captures a frontier town in clear geometry. Rail yards and tracks sweep through the plan, the street grid stops abruptly at the grassland edge, and the land beyond stays almost empty. It is one of the most graphic ways to show a city standing alone in a vast landscape.
Wide bands of track and sidings mark the border railway. They dominate part of the map and explain why the city exists at this remote point.
The city centre is laid out in regular blocks with wide streets. On the open steppe it forms a sharp, dense rectangle that is easy to read in print.
Beyond the last streets, the Hulunbuir steppe stretches away with few features. The empty space gives the poster a spare, powerful frame.

The map suits travellers who crossed the border here by train, people who work in China–Russia trade, and anyone drawn to remote frontier towns. The sharp edge between city and steppe makes it a bold, minimal piece.
