Mapastepec lies in the Soconusco region of southern Chiapas, on the narrow plain between the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and the Pacific. The coastal highway runs through the town and forms its main spine, with the streets arranged around it in a loose grid. Rivers coming down from the mountains cross the plain nearby on their way to the coast.
Toward the sea the land flattens into estuaries, lagoons and mangrove wetlands, part of a long protected coastal system in this corner of Mexico. Rivers from the Sierra
