Maracás lies in south-central Bahia on an upland plateau, higher and often cooler than much of the surrounding interior. Its map shows a compact town with a small network of streets gathered around the centre, then a quick thinning into fields, pasture and scrub. Roads leave the urban area at only a few points, running in long, gently curving lines toward neighbouring municipalities.
Beyond the region, the municipality is known for a vanadium mine operated within its borders, which has given the name some recognition in the international metals industry.
