Marāgheh lies in East Azerbaijan Province on the southern slopes of Mount Sahand, where the land descends towards the plain east of Lake Urmia. The Sufi Chay river runs through the city, and the older quarters follow its valley. Newer districts spread across the flatter ground in straighter blocks, and orchards and gardens surround much of the city's edge.
In the thirteenth century Marāgheh was the capital of the Ilkhanate under Hulagu Khan. Here Nasir al-Din al-Tusi founded the Marāgheh observatory in 1259, one of the most important centres of astronomy in the medieval world. The remains of the observatory still stand on a hill west of the city.
The city also keeps a group of medieval tomb towers, including the Gonbad-e Sorkh, known for its fine brickwork. The gardens and orchards frame the city against the mountain slopes rising to the north.

The hill west of the city that held al-Tusi's observatory appears as an open rise at the edge of the built-up area, crossed by few roads.

Orchards and gardens surround the city, especially along the river. They form a softer band between the city streets and the open slopes beyond.
