Mārkāpur lies in Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh, in dry, open country west of the coast, with the forested Nallamala hills rising further west. On the map the town appears as a compact, irregular network of streets with a railway line passing through and roads heading out across the plain toward the surrounding villages.
The town is best known for slate. Quarries in the area have supplied slate for generations, and Mārkāpur was once famous for the writing slates used by schoolchildren across India. The old Chennakesava temple, a local landmark, stands in the town and gives the older streets a clear centre.
A Mārkāpur map poster shows a practical, working town: a dense core, the straight line of the railway, and roads spreading into flat country with the hills in the distance. It is an understated subject that rewards people who know its streets well.
The Chennakesava temple sits within the older part of town, surrounded by the busiest and most tightly packed streets on the map.
A railway runs through the town, a long straight line across the more irregular street pattern and the open plain around it.
To the west, the land rises toward the Nallamala hills, and the roads leaving town in that direction thin out as the country becomes forested.
