The walled grid
The old centre keeps a regular pattern of streets within the outline of its walls, with gates at the ends of the main axes. It reads clearly as a compact rectangle.

Marsala sits at the far western tip of Sicily, and its map is defined by the line where land meets sea. The historic centre is a compact grid inside the line of its former walls, entered through gates such as Porta Garibaldi and Porta Nuova. Newer districts spread along the coast and inland among the vineyards.
The town grew from ancient Lilybaeum, a Carthaginian stronghold later held by Rome. Its modern name comes from the Arabic Marsa Allah. Capo Boeo, just beyond the old town, is usually given as the westernmost point of Sicily. There the coastline turns sharply and the street grid runs straight into the sea.
North of the town lies the Stagnone lagoon, lined with salt pans and their windmills, and the small island of Mozia with its Phoenician remains. Marsala is also where Garibaldi landed in 1860, and it gives its name to a fortified wine. A Marsala map poster shows all of it: grid, coast, salt pans and lagoon.

The cape at the western edge of the town is often called the westernmost point of Sicily. On the map, coast and streets meet there at a sharp angle.
To the north, the shallow lagoon, its salt pans and the island of Mozia form a pattern of rectangular basins and islets. It contrasts with the dense town.

Marsala links western Sicily's ancient past with its salt, wine and sea, and its map appeals to people with Sicilian roots, travellers who loved the western coast, and anyone drawn to places shaped by water. The composition is spare and balanced.
