Mátészalka is a market and railway town in far northeastern Hungary, in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county, close to the Romanian and Ukrainian borders. The land around it is almost perfectly level, and the map shows it. Streets run in long, regular lines, most houses have gardens behind them, and fields begin right where the town ends.
The railway gives the town its strongest shapes. Several lines meet here, and the tracks, yards and embankments cross the street pattern at angles, dividing the town into distinct quarters. Beyond the last houses, drainage channels draw thin straight lines through the farmland, as is common across this once-marshy plain.
