Ko e mape
Matsushima lies on the coast of Miyagi Prefecture, northeast of Sendai, and its map is defined by the bay rather than the town. More than two hundred small islands, many topped with pine trees, fill the water, and the view is counted among the Three Views of Japan.
The town curves along the shoreline, with the old temple of Zuiganji set just inland and the small Godaido hall standing on a tiny island connected by a bridge. The poet Matsuo Bashō visited in the seventeenth century, and the bay has drawn travellers ever since.
A Matsushima map poster turns the scattered islands into a composition of small, irregular shapes across open water. In black and white, the result is graphic and calm, closer to a drawing than a street plan.
Hundreds of small islands are scattered through the bay, forming a field of irregular shapes across the water that gives the map its unusual character.
Zuiganji and nearby temple grounds sit just behind the waterfront, forming a quiet block of green space in the town centre.
Streets follow the curve of the coast, with the railway and main road running close to the water and linking the town with Sendai.
