Mengman lies in Xishuangbanna, the subtropical southern tip of Yunnan Province, not far from the borders with Laos and Myanmar. Like many place names in this Dai region, it begins with "Meng", a word commonly linked to a valley basin, and the map fits that description. The town sits on flat ground ringed by hills.
The streets of the town are concentrated on the valley floor, with roads leading out between fields and plantations. The surrounding hills are steep and mostly wooded or planted, and the roads that climb them twist sharply. Streams drain the slopes and cross the lowland on their way to larger rivers.
