Merano lies at the head of a wide basin in South Tyrol, where the Passer river leaves its narrow valley and runs down to join the Adige. From above, the town is a compact tangle of medieval lanes on the north bank, a looser pattern of villa streets to the south, and green bands of promenade along both sides of the water. Steep slopes close in on three sides, so the street network thins out quickly as the ground rises.
The historic core is built around a long arcaded street, called Lauben in German and Portici in Italian, which gives the old town its backbone. Merano became a fashionable health resort in the nineteenth century, and the riverside walks, hotels and gardens of that period still shape the plan. The town is bilingual, so its streets, squares and landmarks carry both German and Italian names.
A Merano map poster shows a mountain valley opening into a sheltered basin. The river runs across the frame as a clear diagonal, the old centre forms a dense knot, and paths on the hillside wind across the slopes like fine contour lines. In black and white, the tight medieval streets stand out sharply against the open, finely divided orchards and vineyards around them.
Walking paths follow both banks of the Passer through the centre. The Winter and Summer promenades face each other across the water and show up as parallel lines tracing the river.
The long arcaded street of the old town runs roughly parallel to the river. Its row of narrow frontages forms a single spine that holds the dense medieval core together on the map.
East of the centre, the botanical gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle spread over a terraced slope. Their winding paths make a distinct pattern against the orchards around them.

Ko e hā ʻa Merano
People who have walked Merano's promenades or spent a week at its spa often want to keep the town close, and a map does that quietly. The bend of the river and the arcaded centre are easy to recognise, even for someone who has visited only once.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with the date of a stay or a wedding in the mountains, and choose from five styles, Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. HD files cost $9, or you can order a printed poster.
