Merouana sits in Batna Province in north-eastern Algeria, where the high plains meet the Belezma range at the western edge of the Aurès. The town is compact, with straight streets gathered around a small centre. Its outer edges spread toward orchards and fields, while the mountains rise to the south and east.
The site has a long past. Merouana is identified with Roman Lamasba, known to historians for a Latin inscription that set out how irrigation water was shared among local landowners. Today the area is farming country, and the nearby Belezma National Park protects cedar forests on the higher slopes.
