Michalovce is the main town of the Zemplín region in eastern Slovakia, lying on the Laborec River at the edge of the East Slovak Lowland. On the map the river runs north to south through the town, its channel and floodplain separating older districts from newer ones, while main roads cross it on a few bridges and lead outward to the surrounding villages.
The historic centre forms a compact area of streets around the main square, near a small hill with a manor house that now holds the Zemplín Museum. Beyond it, housing estates built in the later twentieth century appear as larger blocks with more open space between buildings, giving the map a clear contrast in texture.
East of the town lies Zemplínska šírava, a large reservoir often described as the Slovak sea, with beaches and recreation areas along its northern shore.
