Mihara lies on the Seto Inland Sea coast of Hiroshima Prefecture, between Onomichi and Hiroshima city. The town occupies a narrow coastal strip and river mouth, with steep, wooded hills rising immediately behind it and islands scattered offshore.
The most unusual feature on the map is Mihara Castle. Built on reclaimed land at the water's edge, it was known as the floating castle. Today only its stone walls and moats remain, and the railway, including the Sanyō Shinkansen, runs directly over the former main enclosure, with the station built into the castle site.
A Mihara map poster shows a town in close contact with the sea: port basins and ferry piers, the moats beside the station, a dense grid on the flat land and roads winding into the hills. The town is also known for its octopus and a summer dance festival.
The remaining moats and stone walls of Mihara Castle sit directly beside and beneath the railway station, a rare overlap of history and infrastructure.
Ferry piers and harbour basins line the waterfront, with islands of the Inland Sea offshore, giving the poster a detailed southern edge.
Steep, largely unbuilt hills rise close behind the town, confining the streets to a narrow coastal band.
