Mijdrecht is a town in the province of Utrecht, part of the municipality of De Ronde Venen, between Amsterdam and Utrecht. From above it shows a landscape formed entirely by water management. On one side lies a large polder drained in the nineteenth century, its fields cut into long, parallel strips by ditches and straight roads.
The town sits slightly higher than the reclaimed land, with the old village core along a canal and newer residential districts and business parks spreading out around it. Nearby, the lakes of Vinkeveen show what the land looked like before drainage, with narrow peat strips left between open water.
