Miragoâne is the capital of Nippes department, on the northern shore of Haiti's long southern peninsula. It faces the Gulf of Gonâve across a small, sheltered harbour. Just inland lies Lake Miragoâne, one of the largest natural freshwater lakes in the Caribbean, so the town is surrounded by water on two sides.
The layout shows that setting clearly. Streets start at the harbour and climb the steep ground behind it, turning and doubling back to cope with the slope, and a church on the high ground looks out over the bay. Beyond the ridge the land falls toward the lake, whose wide outline fills a large part of the frame.
