Mitrovicë grew where the Sitnica joins the Ibar in northern Kosovo, and from above the rivers decide almost everything. The Ibar runs through the city and splits it into a northern and a southern part, while the Sitnica comes in from the south to meet it. The streets on each bank form their own networks, and the bridges are the few points where they connect.
The main bridge over the Ibar is well known far beyond the city, because for years it marked the line between the two communities living on either side. On a map it's a small crossing, but it carries a lot of meaning. A Mitrovicë map poster shows that divide plainly: two halves of one city facing each other across the water.
The city also has a long mining history. It's closely tied to the Trepča mining complex, which for decades was one of the largest industrial employers in the region. A few bridges link the two banks. The central one is the most recognisable, a short span that has come to symbolise the city itself.
Sitnica confluence
The Sitnica flows in from the south and joins the Ibar within the city, adding a second river line and a meeting point to the composition.
