Modīnagar lies in Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh, on the flat Gangetic plain between Delhi and Meerut. On a map the town is organised along the main highway, which runs straight through the centre, with industrial sites, residential colonies and markets on either side. The land is completely flat, so the street pattern appears clearly, and farmland surrounds the town on all sides.
The town was founded in 1933 by the industrialist Gujar Mal Modi, who set up a sugar mill here, and it grew into the base of the Modi group's businesses. Its name comes from the family. More recently, the rapid rail corridor between Delhi and Meerut has put Modīnagar on a faster route to the capital, and the town has been growing toward its neighbours.
