Montevideo sits on the northern shore of the Río de la Plata, where the river opens toward the Atlantic. From above, the city starts on a narrow peninsula: the Ciudad Vieja, a tight grid of colonial blocks with water on three sides. Behind it the Bay of Montevideo cuts in, and the harbour's piers and basins give the western edge of the map a hard, industrial line.
East of the old town the grid widens and runs inland along Avenida 18 de Julio, the main axis that starts at Plaza Independencia. Farther out, the city goes on in neighbourhoods of mid-rise blocks and tree-lined streets. The coast is lined by the Rambla, a waterfront road and promenade that follows every beach and headland for more than twenty kilometres. On a Montevideo map poster it reads as a single calm line tracing the edge of the land.
Across the bay stands the Cerro, the low hill that some accounts say gave the city its name, with a fortress on its summit. Montevideo is Uruguay's capital and home to about half of the country's people. In 1930 it hosted the first FIFA World Cup, playing the final at the Estadio Centenario in Parque Batlle, and Uruguay won.
The old town fills a narrow point of land between the bay and the estuary, a compact grid of short blocks that looks noticeably denser than the wider streets further east.
A continuous coastal avenue that wraps around rocky points and sandy bays, giving the whole southern edge of the city one long, unbroken curve on the map.
The rounded harbour bay sits west of the centre, with the Cerro rising on the far shore, a quiet counterweight to the dense streets across the water.

Ko e hā ʻa Montevideo
People hang Montevideo for the walks along the Rambla, a flat in Pocitos, or a first trip to the Río de la Plata. The peninsula and the long coastline make a clear, balanced composition that works in a hallway or above a desk.
You can change the title, add a subtitle such as a date or neighbourhood, and keep or edit the coordinates line. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, then download the HD files or order a printed poster.
