Mugina is in Rwanda's Southern Province, in the hill country south-west of Kigali. On the map it does not look like a single town with clear edges. It is a wide pattern of homesteads, small centres and footpaths spread over rounded hills, with roads following the ridgelines and valley bottoms rather than cutting straight across them.
Rwanda is often called the land of a thousand hills, and places like Mugina show why. Almost every slope is farmed, so the map is covered in small plots and paths that climb, curve and double back. Where a few roads meet there is a small trading centre with a market, a school or a church.
