Muhu sits between the Estonian mainland and Saaremaa. From above it reads as a compact, irregular island with a coastline frayed into small bays, spits and islets. The land is low and flat, so there is little relief to shade. What the map shows instead is a light web of country roads linking scattered villages, with patches of forest and open pasture in between.
The most striking line on any map of Muhu is the causeway, the Väinatamm, running west across the shallow strait to Saaremaa. On the opposite side, the ferry harbour at Kuivastu faces Virtsu on the mainland, so the island works as a stepping stone. A main road crosses the island between the two, and most other roads branch off it toward the coast.
Muhu is known for Koguva, a village preserved as an open-air museum of thatched farmsteads, and for a bold embroidery tradition of bright floral patterns. A Muhu map poster strips that colour away and keeps the structure: the fringe of coast, the causeway and the thin roads threading through villages. It suits anyone who has driven across on the way to Saaremaa and stayed longer than planned.
A straight embankment carries the road across the shallow strait to Saaremaa. On the poster it appears as a clean ruled line joining two coastlines, the island's most recognisable mark.
Muhu's shore is broken into shallow coves, low points and small offshore islets. Rendered in black and white, the edge of the island becomes the most detailed part of the whole composition.
From the ferry harbour on the east coast, the main road crosses the island toward the causeway, with smaller lanes branching off to villages such as Koguva on the western shore.

Ko e hā ʻa Muhu
People hang Muhu because it marks a crossing: the ferry, the causeway, the first quiet landscape of the western islands. It works as a summer-house map, a family place, or a reminder of a slow road trip through the Estonian islands.
Change the title to a village name, add a year to the subtitle and adjust the coordinates line. Then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The HD files cost $9 in six print sizes, or you can order the poster printed and framed.
