Muthupet is a town in the Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu, near the southern edge of the Cauvery delta. On the map the town is a modest pattern of streets and markets, but the real subject lies just to the south. There a broad lagoon and a maze of tidal channels open toward the Palk Strait.
The Muthupet mangroves are among the most extensive on the Tamil Nadu coast: a protected wetland threaded with creeks where branches of the delta reach the sea. The area is also known for the migratory birds that arrive in winter.
