Muzaffarābād, the capital of Azad Kashmir, occupies a narrow valley at the confluence of the Neelum and Jhelum rivers. From above, the city looks constrained by its setting: streets climb and twist along steep slopes, and the built area stretches out along the riverbanks wherever the terrain allows.
The city was founded in the seventeenth century and named after Sultan Muzaffar Khan, whose fort still stands above the rivers. In 2005 a powerful earthquake caused severe damage here, and much of the city was rebuilt in the years that followed, which shows on the map in areas of newer, more regular streets.
A Muzaffarābād map poster is essentially a portrait of a confluence. The two rivers form a strong Y-shape at the centre of the composition, with roads following their courses and the city clinging to the slopes around them.
The Neelum joins the Jhelum at the heart of the city, and the meeting of the two rivers forms the dominant shape of the map.
Roads switch back and forth up the valley sides, following contour lines rather than a grid, with settlements spreading along every usable ledge.
The historic fort associated with the city's founder stands near the rivers, a small fixed point in a landscape defined by water and mountain.
