Mytishchi lies directly beyond Moscow's outer ring road to the north-east, and its map follows the railway. The line toward Yaroslavl runs through the middle of town, with stations spaced along it and residential districts built up on both sides. Large blocks of apartment buildings, arranged in the open courtyard layout of Soviet planning, fill the space between main roads.
The town is historically linked to Moscow's water supply. Springs near Mytishchi fed the first Moscow water pipeline, completed in the early nineteenth century. Today the town is also known for Metrowagonmash, a factory that has built carriages for the Moscow Metro for many decades. The upper Yauza River winds through the area in a small green valley.
