Naihāti stands on the east bank of the Hooghly, about forty kilometres upstream from Kolkata. From above, the river forms the western edge of the town, a broad curve that the streets run up to and then stop. The built-up area stretches north to south along the bank, part of the almost continuous line of towns that follows the Hooghly through this industrial belt.
The town is an important railway junction on the line north from Sealdah. A branch crosses the river by bridge to Bandel on the far bank, a crossing that has been in use since the late nineteenth century. Naihāti is also closely tied to Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, the novelist who wrote Vande Mataram. He was born in nearby Kanthalpara, and his family home is now a museum.
A Naihāti map poster works well because of the river. The wide band of water gives the composition a calm, strong edge, the railway lines cut across the streets, and the bridge links the two banks. It shows a working river town that grew up around mills, tracks and the water.
The river runs along the western side of the town as a broad curving band. It is the strongest shape on the poster and gives the whole map its orientation.
The railway crosses the Hooghly to Bandel on the opposite bank. On the map, this single line over open water ties the two riverside towns together.
Several lines meet in Naihāti, and the tracks cut across the street grid at different angles. These straight strokes give the town its clear structure.

Ko e hā ʻa Naihāti
For people who grew up along the Hooghly, Naihāti brings back the ferries, the trains and the river light. Readers of Bengali literature may also want it for its link to Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay.
