Nangal is in the Rupnagar district of Punjab, where the Sutlej leaves the Shivalik foothills and enters the plains. The town grew up around the Bhakra-Nangal project, one of India's largest post-independence river schemes. Its map still reflects that origin, with neatly planned residential sectors placed between the river, the barrage and the canals leading out of it.
The Nangal Dam holds back a reservoir on the Sutlej just below the larger Bhakra Dam upstream in Himachal Pradesh. From here, the Nangal Hydel Channel and other canals carry water across Punjab. The town is also known for its large fertilizer plant.
A Nangal map poster shows this engineered landscape clearly: the wide lake, the straight canal leaving the barrage, and planned housing colonies arranged in tidy blocks, all set against the first folds of the foothills. It is an unusually geometric map for a town of its size.
The lake behind the dam forms a broad pale shape beside the town and marks the point where the Sutlej is first controlled for irrigation and power.
A long, straight canal heads away from the barrage across the plain. It is one of the strongest single lines on the map.
Residential sectors built for the project are arranged in orderly blocks, which gives the town a clear, deliberate street pattern that differs from older Punjabi towns.

Families who worked on the Bhakra-Nangal project, and people who grew up in its colonies, often feel strongly about this town. The poster preserves the place and the engineering that created it in one clean image.
Make it personal by changing the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for instance with a posting year or a family name. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Blueprint suits a dam town especially well.
