Narela lies at the far northern edge of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, close to the border with Haryana. It began as an old market town serving the surrounding farms. It has since been developed as one of Delhi's planned sub-cities, meant to take pressure off the crowded centre. Its map shows that mix, with an older core beside newer planned sectors.
The planned parts are laid out in sectors and pockets with straight roads and regular blocks, while an industrial area adds larger rectangular plots. Farmland and villages still fill wide spaces around them, so the built-up area ends in open fields. Main roads and a railway line connect Narela with the rest of Delhi to the south.
Because it is still growing, Narela's plan changes from year to year as new housing and roads appear. A Narela map poster records it at a particular moment. It shows a Delhi district that is still half town and half countryside, with the geometry of planned streets set against a looser pattern of village lanes.
