Naze is the main town of Amami Ōshima, a subtropical island south of Kyushu in Kagoshima Prefecture, and since 2006 it has been part of the city of Amami. The town fills a narrow strip of flat land at the head of a sheltered bay. Steep, forested hills rise almost immediately behind the last streets and give the settlement its tight, crowded outline.
The harbour is the centre of life here, with ferries linking the island to mainland Japan and Okinawa. Amami is known for Ōshima tsumugi, a finely woven silk dyed with local mud, and for its subtropical forests and coral coast. In Naze, the dense grid by the water feels like it has been pressed between the sea and the mountains.
A Naze map poster shows the whole town fitting into a small space. Piers and quays outline the bay in hard geometric lines. The streets pack tightly into the flat ground, and above them the hills are mostly empty, crossed only by a few winding roads. It is a very clear picture of how an island town adapts to its terrain.
Naze wraps around the inner end of a deep bay whose piers and harbour walls make a sharp, structured edge against the water on the map.
The town's streets fill a small coastal plain and stop abruptly where the hills begin, which gives the built area a distinctive compressed outline.
A few roads climb out of town in tight switchbacks through the forested slopes, adding looping lines to the otherwise quiet upland areas of the map.

Ko e hā ʻa Naze
Anyone who has sailed into Naze or grown up on Amami remembers how close the hills sit to the harbour. This map captures that closeness and makes a thoughtful keepsake of island life far from the mainland.
