Nellimarla lies in the Vizianagaram district of northern Andhra Pradesh, a short distance from Vizianagaram city and not far inland from the Bay of Bengal. On the map, it appears as a compact town along the main road, surrounded by paddy fields, irrigation tanks and low hills to the north.
The town is known for its jute mill, one of the older industrial sites in the region, which gave Nellimarla much of its twentieth-century character. Nearby Ramatheertham is known for its hilltop temple and the remains of an ancient Buddhist site, drawing pilgrims and visitors.
