Ko e mape
Netanya stretches along Israel's Mediterranean coast north of Tel Aviv, and its most striking feature is the line of sandstone cliffs that separates the city from its beaches. On the map the coastline is almost straight, a long edge from north to south. A promenade and parks run along the clifftop, with paths descending to the sand below.
The city was founded in 1929 and named after the philanthropist Nathan Straus. Its centre is a fairly regular grid that leads down to Independence Square, the open plaza near the seafront. Over the decades Netanya grew in long bands parallel to the coast, with newer neighbourhoods of high-rise apartments appearing to both the north and the south.
East of the city, the coastal highway runs north to south, a strong line parallel to the shore. Toward the southern edge, the Iris reserve protects sandy hills where purple irises bloom in late winter, and the city has long been associated with the diamond trade. A Netanya map poster shows a city built along an edge, facing the sea at every turn.
A promenade and a chain of small parks follow the top of the coastal cliffs, looking down over beaches reached by stairs, ramps and a lift.
The central square opens toward the sea at the heart of the city, where the regular grid of the older centre meets the coastline.
On the southern edge, a protected area of sandy hills preserves native purple irises, a patch of open land among the apartment districts.

Ko e hā ʻa Netanya
Netanya is a city of sea views, and its map makes that clear at a glance: every street eventually leads west toward the cliffs. It suits families who moved here from abroad, people who grew up by its beaches, and anyone who has spent summers on the promenade.
