New Bedford sits on the west side of the Acushnet River where it opens into Buzzards Bay, facing Fairhaven across the harbour. Its map is a long, narrow city laid out on a slope, with a regular grid of streets rising from the waterfront and running north and south for several miles. Wharves, piers and a stone hurricane barrier give the harbour its hard, angular edges.
In the nineteenth century New Bedford was the leading whaling port in the world, and Herman Melville set out on a whaling voyage from this harbour before writing Moby-Dick. The cobbled streets of the old waterfront now form the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, and the city remains one of the most valuable commercial fishing ports in the United States, largely thanks to scallops.
A New Bedford map poster shows the city as its builders shaped it: a harbour lined with piers, a dense historic core near the water and long residential streets stretching away along the shore. The bridge to Fairhaven and the barrier across the harbour mouth complete a composition that is plainly maritime.
Rows of piers and wharves line the harbour, a jagged edge of short parallel strokes that still serves one of the most important fishing fleets on the East Coast.
Completed in the 1960s, the barrier stretches across the harbour entrance, drawing a firm line between the sheltered port and the open waters of Buzzards Bay.
Residential streets run in long parallel lines up the hill and down the peninsula to the south, creating an even rhythm that fills most of the poster.

Fishing families, Moby-Dick readers and anyone who has walked the cobbles by the whaling museum has a reason to hang this map. It captures a harbour city whose shape still tells the story of its trade.
