Ninove lies in East Flanders on the River Dender, west of Brussels. From above, the river winds through the town from south to north, and the older streets gather close to its banks. Roads radiate from the centre to surrounding villages, forming a star-like network across the flat, farmed landscape of the Dender valley.
The town is known for its former Norbertine abbey, whose large church still stands near the centre. On a map, the abbey grounds show as a distinct, more open block among the tight medieval streets. Ninove is also known in Flanders for its carnival, one of the region's largest annual events.
