Nipomo lies in southern San Luis Obispo County, on the Central Coast of California, just north of the Santa Maria River. From above, it has two distinct parts. The small historic town sits along the foothills east of Highway 101, while the Nipomo Mesa to the west is a broad tableland of large lots, curving residential roads and long, straight rows of eucalyptus.
West of the mesa, the land drops toward the coastal dunes and the Pacific, a pale, open area on the map. The Dana Adobe, built for the rancho granted to William Dana in the nineteenth century, recalls the area's ranching past. A Nipomo map poster shows how an agricultural landscape has gradually filled with homes while keeping much of its open character.
Nipomo also appears in one of the best-known photographs in American history. In 1936 Dorothea Lange photographed a mother and her children at a pea pickers' camp here, and the image became known as Migrant Mother. Today's quiet roads and farm fields seem far from that moment, but the map shows the same land.
A wide, elevated tableland west of the highway is covered by winding residential roads and large lots, forming a loose, spacious pattern on the map.
The highway runs north to south through the community, separating the historic town near the foothills from the newer neighbourhoods on the mesa.
To the west, development gives way to the open coastal dunes near the Pacific, leaving a pale, quiet edge along one side of the composition.

Nipomo draws people who value space, ocean air and a slower pace, and a map of it captures that sense of room. It suits long-time residents, newcomers who have just settled on the mesa, and anyone with Central Coast roots.
