Nordstadt Map Poster & Print
Nordstadt is an inner district of Hanover, just north of the city centre. It is one of the city's student quarters, built largely in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as the city expanded. On a map, it is a dense grid of perimeter blocks with streets meeting at angles, broken up by small squares and a church or two.
The district's western edge is dominated by greenery. The main building of Leibniz University is housed in the former Welfenschloss, a nineteenth-century palace, with the Welfengarten stretching out in front of it. Beyond lie the Georgengarten and the approaches to the Herrenhausen Gardens, with the River Leine not far away. The contrast between tight housing blocks and wide parkland is the defining feature of the area.

Perimeter blocks
Much of Nordstadt is built in closed urban blocks from the decades around 1900. On the map they create a dense, regular texture broken by occasional squares.
Gardens to the west
The Welfengarten and Georgengarten open up the western side of the district. Their broad green spaces balance the density of the housing and lead towards Herrenhausen.
