Branching cul-de-sacs
Residential streets divide again and again into short dead ends. The result is a fine, tree-like pattern that fills much of the poster and gives it an almost organic texture.

Oak Hill is a census-designated place in western Fairfax County, Virginia, in the fast-growing suburbs between Washington and Washington Dulles International Airport. It is mainly residential, made up of subdivisions built from the late twentieth century onward. It is closely tied to nearby Herndon, Chantilly and Reston, where many residents shop and work.
From above, Oak Hill is a study in suburban planning. Wide arterial roads and parkways enclose large blocks, and inside each block residential streets loop and branch into cul-de-sacs. Tree cover and stream valleys fill the gaps between neighbourhoods, and schools, pools and small parks take up the open spaces. The airport lies just to the west, a large geometric presence beyond the housing.
An Oak Hill map poster turns this intricate pattern of loops and branches into something close to an abstract drawing. It suits families who raised children here, people moving on after years in the same house, and anyone who wants the familiar route home from the parkway on the wall.
Residential streets divide again and again into short dead ends. The result is a fine, tree-like pattern that fills much of the poster and gives it an almost organic texture.
Major roads, including the Fairfax County Parkway, divide the area into large blocks. They give the map a strong underlying structure, like the frame of a leaded window.
Washington Dulles International Airport lies just west of Oak Hill. In a wider frame, its long runways can appear as bold straight lines at the edge of the poster.

Suburban neighbourhoods are often where the most personal memories are made. A map of Oak Hill shows the exact street, the school and the path to the park, which makes it a thoughtful gift for a move, a milestone or a new home.
