Ōda lies on the Sea of Japan coast in Shimane Prefecture, in the historic Iwami region. From above, the town fills a modest valley that opens toward the sea. Its streets follow the river and the coastal railway, and steep wooded hills close in on both sides. Smaller settlements are scattered along the coast and up the inland valleys.
Ōda is best known as the home of Iwami Ginzan, a silver mine that was one of the most productive in the world in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inland, the volcanic peaks of Mount Sanbe rise above grassland, and the coast is lined with small harbours and rocky shores.
An Ōda map poster brings together the coastline, the narrow valley of the town and the ridges pressing in around it. It is a restrained, elegant map that suits anyone who has travelled through rural Shimane or has family roots on the Iwami coast.
The shoreline runs along the north-west edge of the map with small coves and headlands. The coastal railway and road follow it closely.
The town centre sits in a narrow valley that opens toward the sea. Streets are packed along the river between the hills.
Forested ridges rise sharply around the town and continue inland toward Mount Sanbe. They leave the built area as a slim band of streets.
