This Oshima lies on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, the long arm of land that reaches north into the Sea of Japan. The area is shaped by the meeting of coast and hills. Low wooded ridges come close to the sea, and settlement fills the valleys and the narrow coastal strip between them.
On a map, that creates a layered composition. There is the coastline, then roads and houses along it, and then rice fields stepping up into the valleys before the forest takes over. The streets are irregular and follow the land, as they do in many older rural areas of Japan.
An Oshima map poster presents the character of the Noto coast in fine lines. It shows a place where the sea, the fields and the hills are all within a short distance, drawn with the restraint that suits the Japanese countryside.
The coastline bounds one side of the map, and its edge gives the composition a clear, strong outline.
Rice fields fill the flatter ground between the hills. On the poster they show as fine subdivisions reaching inland.
Forested hills rise behind the settlements. They stay mostly empty on the map, which sets off the detail of the streets.

Ko e hā ʻa Oshima
The Noto Peninsula holds strong ties for those who grew up there and for people who have returned to help it rebuild. A map of Oshima is a quiet way to keep this stretch of coast close.
