Twin historic cores
The former centres of Osterholz and Scharmbeck are still visible as separate clusters of older, curving streets. Residential areas built after the merger now join them.

Osterholz-Scharmbeck sits a short distance north of Bremen in Lower Saxony. As the hyphenated name suggests, it was formed from two places, Osterholz and Scharmbeck, which were joined in the late 1920s. Both historic cores can still be made out on the map: one around the old monastery church of Osterholz, the other around Scharmbeck's centre. Newer streets fill the land between them.
Beyond the town the ground drops into the Teufelsmoor, a vast former bog that was drained and settled in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Its straight ditches and long, narrow farm strips contrast sharply with the town's rounded street pattern. The artists' village of Worpswede lies across the moor, and the Hamme river winds through the lowland nearby.
An Osterholz-Scharmbeck map poster holds both sides of the place: the compact town with its railway station and district offices, and the flat, water-lined landscape that begins at its edge. It is a map of a district town that looks outward to the moor, with Bremen only a short train ride away.
The former centres of Osterholz and Scharmbeck are still visible as separate clusters of older, curving streets. Residential areas built after the merger now join them.
Beyond the town, straight ditches and long rectangular fields cut through the former bog. From above, this planned farming pattern looks almost like a ruled sheet.
The church of the former Osterholz monastery anchors one of the historic cores. The streets around it follow older property lines, not a planned grid.
