Ostrov stands on the Velikaya River in Pskov Oblast, south of Pskov itself, and its name simply means island. The town grew around an island in the river where a fortress once stood, and that origin is still easy to read on a map. The Velikaya splits into two channels with the island between them, and the streets on both banks turn toward the crossing.
Ostrov is best known for its two chain suspension bridges, built in the mid-nineteenth century and among the oldest surviving bridges of their kind in Russia. They link the island to each shore, and on a map they appear as two short, precise lines across the water. Around them, the town extends in a modest grid of low houses, churches and gardens.
