Otradnyy is in Samara Oblast, east of Samara, on the Bolshoy Kinel River. It grew up in the years after the Second World War, when oil was being developed in the Volga–Ural region. The street plan shows its planned origins, with straight avenues, regular residential blocks and clearly separated industrial areas.
The river runs along one side of the town in loose bends, with floodplain meadows and woodland along its banks. On a map, this soft, natural edge contrasts with the orderly geometry of the Soviet-era microdistricts.
A railway line and roads to the regional centre pass nearby, and on the edges of town the map shows the infrastructure of the oil industry. An Otradnyy map poster is a portrait of a purpose-built town, planned as a whole and still easy to read from above.
Residential microdistricts are set in regular rectangles along straight streets, a clean geometric pattern in the middle of the poster.
The river meanders along the edge of town through meadows and trees, the main natural line in the composition.
Oil-industry sites and transport routes sit on the outskirts, separate from housing, as the original plan intended.

Ko e hā ʻa Otradnyy
Otradnyy's residents, and the many families who moved there to work in the oil industry, often feel a strong tie to the town. The print shows its planned shape precisely.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be personalised, and Blueprint suits a town that was laid out on a drawing board. Download the six-size file set for $9, or order a matte print.
