Pacajá lies in the Brazilian state of Pará, on the Transamazonian highway, the BR-230, between Anapu and Novo Repartimento. Like many towns along this road, it grew up around the highway itself. On the map, the BR-230 forms a firm line through the centre, with blocks of streets laid out on either side.
The town's grid is fairly regular, a sign of relatively recent, planned growth. Around it, straight side roads lead out into farmland and cleared plots. Beyond these, the texture of the land becomes looser, with streams and patches of forest shaping the edges of the settled area.
The municipality takes its name from the Pacajá River, which flows through the region toward the lower Amazon. A Pacajá map poster shows a very different kind of town: a place shaped by a single road across the Amazon, drawn in simple and honest lines.
The Transamazonian highway runs straight through town and serves as its main street, the line from which everything else grows.
On either side of the highway, a regular grid of blocks forms the urban core, noticeably more orderly than older riverside towns in Pará.
Long, straight side roads run out from the town into the surrounding farmland, creating a comb-like pattern typical of the Transamazon corridor.
