Pago Pago is defined by its harbour. From above, a long inlet cuts deep into the southern coast of Tutuila and bends as it narrows, almost dividing the island. Steep, forested ridges rise straight from the water on both sides. Settlement is limited to the thin strip of flatter ground at the shoreline, and one main road follows the harbour edge all the way around.
The harbour is often described as one of the deepest and best-protected natural harbours in the South Pacific. That shelter shaped the town's history as a naval station and later as a centre of tuna canning. Above the inner harbour stands Rainmaker Mountain. Its name refers to the heavy rain the peaks draw from passing clouds, and it gives Pago Pago one of the wettest harbours anywhere.
A Pago Pago map poster is a study in water and edges. The inlet forms a bold dark or light shape, depending on the style, and the road hugs it like a drawn outline. Small side streets reach a short way up the valleys before the terrain takes over. The result is simple, dramatic and unlike any grid city.

The main road follows the harbour's edge closely around its whole length. Houses, wharves and small villages string along it because the ground behind rises so steeply.
Short lanes branch off the coast road and climb a little way into narrow valleys. On the poster they look like fine threads fading into the mountains.

For people with family ties to American Samoa, or who served or worked there, Pago Pago's harbour is instantly recognisable. A map of that deep inlet and its single encircling road is a quiet way to keep the island close.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line with a name, a year or a phrase in Samoan. Then choose one of five styles, Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint in particular gives the harbour a strong nautical look.
