Paisley lies just west of Glasgow in Renfrewshire, on either side of the White Cart Water. From above, the river winds north through the centre. The medieval abbey stands beside it, Victorian terraces and mill streets pack in around it, and larger housing estates reach toward the Gleniffer Braes on the southern skyline.
The town grew around Paisley Abbey, founded in the twelfth century. In the nineteenth century it became world famous for weaving and thread. The teardrop pattern produced on its shawls still carries the town's name, and the Coats and Clark mills made Paisley a centre of the global thread trade. Glasgow Airport sits on its northern edge.
