Pakxan is the capital of Bolikhamsai province in central Laos. Its name refers to its position at the mouth of the Nam Xan, where that river flows into the Mekong. From above, the town spreads along the Mekong's north bank, with the smaller river curving in from the north to join it at the edge of town.
Across the Mekong lies Bueng Kan province in Thailand, so the river here is also a border. National Route 13, the main north-south highway of Laos, passes through Pakxan, and the town's streets form a loose grid between the highway and the riverfront. Beyond them the land opens into rice fields and forest.
A Pakxan map poster is shaped by water. The wide sweep of the Mekong fills one side of the frame, the Nam Xan adds a second curve, and the town sits in the angle between them. It is a composition that works especially well in black and white, where the rivers become broad, calm fields of tone.
The Mekong is very wide here and forms the town's southern edge as well as the border with Thailand, giving the map a strong horizontal line.
The Nam Xan meets the Mekong right beside the town, and the junction of the two rivers is the defining feature of Pakxan's map.
Laos's main highway runs through town, a firm line connecting Pakxan with Vientiane to the northwest and southern provinces beyond.

Pakxan suits anyone with a connection to the Mekong: people from the town, travellers who stopped there on Route 13, or those who have looked across the river from the Thai side. Its two rivers make a map that is simple and easy to recognise.
