Pasuruan lies on the north coast of East Java, facing the Madura Strait between Surabaya and Probolinggo. Its map runs from the sea inland: a low coastline edged with fishponds and mangrove, a river winding through the city to its mouth, and a compact centre where the older streets gather near the waterfront and the main coastal road.
The city was an important port and trading town in the colonial era, especially for sugar grown on the plains behind it, and a number of Dutch-era buildings survive in the centre.
