Pat Heung is a rural area in the Yuen Long district of Hong Kong's New Territories. It lies on low ground north of Tai Mo Shan, the territory's highest peak, and next to Kam Tin and Shek Kong. On a map it looks very different from the dense grids of Kowloon: a patchwork of villages, small roads and open land.
The name means eight villages, a reference to the traditional village groups of the area. Many of these communities have long histories, and the map shows them as separate clusters of lanes, linked by winding roads across fields, nurseries and small workshops.
A Pat Heung map poster captures a side of Hong Kong that visitors rarely picture. The scattered settlements, the steep contours to the south and the fine, irregular road network make a print that feels calm and detailed at the same time.
Traditional villages appear as distinct knots of short lanes, spaced across the valley and each connected to the others by narrow country roads.
To the south the ground rises steeply towards Hong Kong's highest mountain, where roads thin out and the map gives way to open hillside.
Between the villages, open patches of farmland and nurseries leave light areas on the print, contrasting with the dense clusters of houses.

Ko e hā ʻa Pat Heung
Pat Heung is meaningful for families from the villages, for people who have lived in Yuen Long, and for Hong Kongers who know a rural New Territories that differs from the city skyline. The map is an honest portrait of that quieter landscape.
