Patulul lies in the department of Suchitepéquez, on the Pacific side of Guatemala, where the land falls from the volcanic highlands toward the coastal plain. The town keeps the classic layout of Spanish-American foundations. A central plaza sits at the heart of a regular grid of blocks, and a handful of roads lead out toward the fields and neighbouring towns.
The surrounding countryside is agricultural. Sugarcane, coffee and other crops cover the slopes and lowlands, and streams from the highlands cut shallow valleys through them on their way south. From above, the orderly town blocks stand out clearly against the larger, more irregular farm plots around them.
