Peçanha lies in eastern Minas Gerais, in the hilly country of the Rio Doce basin. The terrain is a series of rounded hills and narrow valleys, and the town's map follows it closely. Streets bend along the valley floor and climb a short way up the slopes. The result is an irregular, compact plan shaped by the ground beneath it.
Like many towns in the Minas interior, Peçanha is the centre of a large rural municipality.
