Pekan is the royal town of Pahang, on the Pahang River a short distance upstream from its mouth. On a map the river dominates. It is a wide, slow channel with islands and bends, with the town strung out along its bank and low ground stretching east toward the coast of the South China Sea.
The town is the seat of the Sultan of Pahang, and palaces and royal grounds take up a large part of the map. These include Istana Abu Bakar and its broad lawns. Pekan is also the hometown of Tun Abdul Razak, Malaysia's second prime minister, and it is known for Pahang's traditional silk weaving.
A Pekan map poster brings together the river, the royal grounds and a modest town grid. The open palace grounds read as calm spaces between the streets, while the river curves boldly across the frame. It is a considered, understated image of a place that matters more than its size suggests.
The longest river in Peninsular Malaysia passes Pekan near the end of its course, wide and meandering. It gives the poster its main curve.
Palace compounds and open lawns, including the grounds of Istana Abu Bakar, appear as broad quiet spaces. They contrast with the finer street pattern of the town.
The centre follows the riverbank in a long, narrow line. Streets run parallel to the water, and short roads lead down to the shore.
