Pelhřimov is a town in the Vysočina region, in the rolling uplands between Bohemia and Moravia. Its map shows a clear historic centre: a compact oval of streets built around a large rectangular square, the outline of the old town walls still legible in the way later roads curve around it. Beyond that core, residential districts spread outward across gently sloping ground.
Two town gates survive from the fortifications, marking where old routes once entered the centre, and the square itself is lined with burgher houses and the parish church. Pelhřimov is also widely known in the Czech Republic as a town of records, home to a museum of records and curiosities and an annual festival dedicated to unusual achievements.
